Davie Gouty Edncatioa Center Sehedale Art Classes For Stnleats AST CLASSES FO* STUDENTS (Grades 4-S) Classes will begin July 10 and continue for 5 weeks for students in grades 4 through 8 in elementary school. Class es will be held daily on Mon day, Wednesday and Friday, with classes beginning at 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. ' Interested students in these grades contact Mr. Lor in Mix on at Cooleemee, 284-2071. ADULT AST CLASSES Adult art classes in oil paint ing will begin Tuesday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. and dismiss at 8:30 p.m. Classes will meet once weekly. Interested adults contact Mr. Mixon at the Da vie County Education Center at 284-2071; EDUCATIONAL MOVIES FOE ADULTS Each Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. educational movies for adults and older teen agers will be shown at the Da ivie County Education Center. Selections will appeal to both adults and chil dren. Beginning July 10 the hours will be: Mornings 10:00 am. - 12:00 p.m., Monday - Saturday: Af ternoons, 2:00 p.m. • 6:00 p.m., Monday • Friday; Evening, 7:00 pjn. - 9:00 p.m, Thursday. ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES Adult education classes' will begin in the evenings the lat ter part of July. The program offers an adult high school diploma upon completion of the course. STORYHOUK Each Monday morning from 9:00 to 10."00 begining on Mon day, July 10, a story hour will be held at the Davie County Education Center for Ist, 2nd, and 3rd grade studentts. On Dean's List A total of 621 students achi eved grades which earned them honors on the Dean's List at Appalachian State Teachers College, Boone, N.C. during the Spring quarter, ac cording to an announcement from the office of D. Kenneth Webb, Jr., Dean of Students. Ray Collette Heads Rotary Roy W. Collette assumed the duties of presidency of the Mocks ville Rotary Club on Tuesday, June 26th. Retiring President Ted Jun ker presided over the session and thanked his fellow officers and members for their coop eration during the past year. He presented a secretary's pin to IX". Ramey F. Kemp and the President's pin to Mr. Collette. In turn, Mr. Collette present ed the past-president's pin to Mr. Junker. COOLEEMEE, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1967 To Attend Delco-Remy Service School For Rowan Tech Library News Chip Essie has an insect collection at Davie County Public Library, now on dis play. The collection contains about 100 insects, all of which can be found in Davie County. The insects, which are mostly economic insects, will be ar ranged and classified by OR DERS and IS ORDERS are re presented. Some interesting facts concerning the collection are that people need to have a better knowledge of insects they could better control them or utilize them if they knew more of their life cycles, ha bits, foods, preferences, etc. Information has been given that one half of all deaths are caused by insects; and, for every 1 pound of insects feed ing 5 pounds of crops are lost. I Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ellis of Traford, Pennsylvania visit ed Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ellis and children from Tuesday un til Sunday of last week. Miekle Tops Snipes For Club Golf Title Bud Mickle, a long ball hit ter with a picture book swing, is the new golf champion of the Salisbury Country Club. Mickle survived a shank start, a sizzling birdie barrage and finally, his own balky putter, to defeat Allen Snipes of Cooleemee, in the 36-hole fin als. Never before had two more inexperienced players reached the finals. It was both players' first real competitive test, nei ther have played for a major local championship before and Snipes having gripped a golf club for the first time in his life less than four years ago. This school will be held at the Del co-Remy Division of General Motors in Anderson, Indiana. This training program is pro vided for instructors of auto motive subjects to keep them up-to-date with the latest developments in storage bat teries, cranking motors, igni tion systems, Delcotron gen erators, direct current genera tors, and voltage and current regulators. Also included will be a series of factory tours through automotive product ion plants to view manufac turing operations involved in producing automotive electr ical equipment. Easley of Portland, Oregon has ac cepted- the appointment as librarian of me uavie coun ty Public Library System. Miss Easley, who will re ceive the Master of Science degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina on August 24, 1967, will assume hei duties here on Septemuer Ist. Miss Easley was born in Hood River, Oregon. She re ceived her elementary and secondary education in Hood River and in Washing ton. She graduated with honors from the Dalle.; Senior High School in 1960. She graduated with a B. A. degree in Arts and Letters from Portland State' College, Portland, Oregon in June of 1966. She received a scholarship from the State Library Association and en tered the Graduate School of Library Science at the Uni versity of North Carloina at Chapel Hill. She is the daughter of Mrs. Martha Fasley and the late Robert Easley. Her mother Wake Forest Dean's List A total of 506 students in the School of Liberal Arts and School of Business Adminis tration at Wake Forest Univer sity qualified for the spring semester dean's list. Little Leagie Aid Poiy League At one game past the mid way point in regular season play the Cooleemee Little Lea gue has a won-lost record of 7-1 and stands second in the league. Our only loss has been to Mocksville by a score of 6-3. Mocksville is in first place with a record of 8-0. Coolee mee victories have been over Fork twice, Farmington, Wood leaf, Advance, Blaise Baptist, and Smith Grove. Strong, pit ching, good defensive play, and timely hitting have produced a strong and exciting Little League ball club for Coolee mee. The pitching chores are handled by David Freeman and Jerry Howard. Other pos itions are as follows: 18-Jeff Jordan, 28-BUly Wall, SS- Steve Ridenhour, SB-Mike Al exander, C-Ricky Glarr, LF- Robin Benson, CF-Sidney Nail, and RF-Kenny Shore. Cool eemee also has good bench strength. These include Randy Brooks, Perry Creason, John ny Munday, and Russ Spry. The Cooleemee Pony Lea gue Team has not been as fortunate in their won and lost record. They are presently in fourth place with I wins and 3 losses. Their wins have been over Smith Grove and Wood leaf. Their losses have been to Fork, Farmington, and Mock sville. Pitching chares are handled by Denny Cartner and Danny Cornell. Other pos itions are as follows: 18-Gary Messick, 28-Ker>nv Leonard, SS-R C. Athey, 38-Frankie Garwood, C-Gary Blalock, UF- Danny Correll or Darrell Jones, CF-Dennis King, RF- Barl CuthreU or Mike Short. MISS LINDA EASLEY lives in Portland, Oregon. In a letter to Mrs. Roy J. Hairis, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Davie Coun ty Library, Miss Easley wrote: "I have seen North Carolina Public Library Systems from Wilmington to A« heville and none can compare with the Davie County System in ex cellence of progressive public spirit or physical facilities. It will be a real pleasure to live and work in Davie County". While at Portland State, Miss Easley was employed in the PSC Library as a student assistant in Technical Process es. She did searching in four Cyrillic-based languages and compiled a bibliography of French language holdings for the head of the French Depart ment. During the summer of IMS £ie wa« the Junior Clerk Mi the Music Room at the Mult nomah County Library in Portland, with one Page under her supervision. She accepted a Civil Service Library As sistant 1 position immediately after graduation and was em- Dloyed in the Science Depart ment of the Portland State College Library until she came to the University of North Carolina. In Library School. Miss Eas ley is preparing herself for cataloging technical services and for reference work. Homecoming At N. Cooleemee Baptist Church On Sunday, July 9, there will be the annual Homecom ing at the North Cooleemee Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Crea son will preach the homecom ing sermon at 11:00 a.m. Din ner will be served picnic style at 1:00 p.m. and singing at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and bring a basket and stay for the singing. Tennis Biffs Several people in the com munity have expressed a de sire to have a community ten nis tournament this summer. The recreation center is con sidering this possibility at the present time. The tournament, if held, would be played on Saturdays and Sundays on the court at the center. In order for a successful tournament to be held a good number of peo ple would have to participate in it Anyone interested in playing in this tournament contact the Recreation Center before July 23rd. Definite plans for the tournament will be announced following this date. Church Softball League Due to the fact that many of the players will be on their vacations, no Softball games will be played during the week of July 10.
